1000 Stories Bourbon Barrel Aged Chardonnay is a very pleasant surprise!
1000 Stories Bourbon Barrel Aged Chardonnay is a pleasant surprise! I'm quite tired of Chardonnay, I'm more of a fan of Sauvignon Blanc and slightly leaner and lighter wine styles, but this was a very nice experience!
1000 Stories Bourbon Barrel Aged Chardonnay is a very pleasant surprise! I’m quite tired of Chardonnay, I’m more of a fan of Sauvignon Blanc and slightly leaner and lighter wine styles, but it’s been a very long time since I’ve tasted Chardonnay from California, so I wanted to have a go at 1000 Stories Chardonnay – and I’m glad I did, because it was a very pleasant experience!
1000 Stories Bourbon Barrel Aged Chardonnay is a unique flavor bomb that clearly stands out from the crowd, but then it is not a pure Chardonnay either – it is produced from 86% Chardonnay, 8% Viognier, 6% “other white grapes”. I myself imported wine from Kendall-Jackson in California, and naturally I loved “my” Chardonnay, which at the time was quite heavy with a touch too much oak – 1000 Stories on the other hand, which is produced by my former competitor Fetzer Vineyards is something completely different. It’s finesse, it’s elegant and flattering, it’s balanced and comfortable, and quite slim – almost like me.
I was so proud of my Kendall-Jackson wines that I even gave this winery a big role in my popular, exciting and humorous books about the unconventional Lotte-Marie, Norway’s feminine answer to Harry Hole by Jo Nesbø and Varg Veum by Gunnar Staalelsen. You will find more about my books right here.
1000 Stories Chardonnay is clear of which grape it is mainly produced from, with aromas of ripe yellow apples, a hint of peach, pear and tropical fruit, a hint of barrel and vanilla, as well as some nuts, honey and perhaps a hint of smoke in the aftertaste. Everything harmoniously integrated into each other. In the mouth, the wine feels round like velvet with a good body, at the same time this wine refreshes the mouth cavity in a particularly good way – and I like that!
1000 Stories is thus a typical and delicious Chardonnay aged in French and American oak for 2-7 months, while 40% of the wine is aged in used bourbon barrels from Kentucky, and perhaps this is the secret behind the flattering smoky aftertaste. And for someone who also likes whiskey with a good smokiness, this is right up my alley. Need say no more! Now we are moving towards brighter times, and that’s good – so then it’s just a matter of filling up the fridge with bright joys and happiness! Photo; VCT Norway.
