According to Lonely Planet, the island’s hub and busiest destination, Hvar Town is glitz and glamorous with lively nightlife estimated to draw around 20,000 people a day in the high season. It’s odd that they can all fit in the small bay town, where 13th-century walls surround beautifully ornamented Gothic palaces and traffic-free marble streets, but they do.
There are several good restaurants, bars and hotels here, but thanks to the island’s appeal to well-heeled guests, the prices can be seriously inflated. Don’t be put off if you’re on a lower budget though, as private accommodation and multiple hostels cater to a younger, more diverse crowd.
Visitors wander along the main square, explore the sights on the winding stone streets, swim at the numerous beaches or pop off to the Pakleni Islands to get into their birthday suits – but most of all they come to party, Lonely Planets writes. In my opinion, unfortunately, it is too much partying among the youngsters at Hvar – and they are showing too little respect for the Island and for other tourists.
The city of broken glas
Hvar is the city of broken glass, someone told us before we got there, and I totally understand why after being there, so yes, Hvar’s reputation as Croatia’s premier party town is well deserved, and this fact I think they should do something about – because to se all the drunken youngsters rave around the streets at night is extremely annoying and devastating.
Of course youngsters want´s to have fun and have a good party, so did we when we were young, right? But breaking bottles all over the place is completely unacceptable, and I am surprised that this kind of stupid behavior does not have any consequences, for example in the form of fines. When the city gets a reputation due to youth vandalism, something should be done.
The youngsters should learn that manners also applies to Hvar, for the kind of behavior that plays out in the small city every night is just really sad to observe. Here measures should be taken – crushing bottles or making other vandalism by drunk youngsters should in my opinion result in fines, because this type of behavior is a lack of respect for the island, its residents and its culture – and of course other guests. But other than that – Hvar is really a very nice place to visit.
To be honest – I love everything about Croatia, the uniq people – because they really are, the food and wine, the landscape and the beautiful ocean!
