So, what is the difference? However you spell or pronounce them, Syrah and Shiraz are the same grape variety, but made in two distinct wine styles. As a general rule, wines labelled as Syrah will follow the Northern Rhône style with fine tannins, higher acidity and a lean fruit profile with moderate body and alcohol. And, if matured, in French oak.

In Australia – Down Under, and particularly in the Barossa and McLaren Vale, the Syrah grape became known with a new style and a new name; Shiraz. Today Shiraz is namely wines that share the traditional Aussie style, which is generally richer and more ripe-fruited, with a fuller body and more alcohol that a Syrah from France. Maturation is often in American oak.

A Taste of Shiraz-Syrah is illustrated with beautiful and inspiring pictures, also for each recipe.
